Most humanoid robot coverage shows a demonstration: a controlled environment, a scripted task, a press event. A smaller and more interesting category is machines doing scheduled work in public, with logged hours and measurable output.

This page covers the second category as of August 2026 — what is genuinely deployed, what the operational numbers actually say, and where the reporting is less certain than the headlines suggest.

Hangzhou: 15 traffic robots with logged hours

The clearest operational example is in Hangzhou, China. On <strong>1 May 2026</strong> the city deployed a squad of 15 intelligent traffic-management robots around West Lake and major commercial districts.

The machines stand approximately 1.88 metres and perform standardised police traffic-control gestures synchronised with the traffic signals. They issue verbal warnings, manage pedestrians and electric scooters, provide directions and tourist assistance, and identify certain violations.

What makes this worth attention is that the numbers were published. According to People’s Daily, by late June the squad had accumulated <strong>647.7 hours of operational service</strong>, issued more than <strong>25,000 traffic-violation warnings</strong>, and handled more than <strong>2,000 public consultations</strong>.

Human officers described the effect as the robots absorbing repetitive duties so officers can concentrate on accidents and emergencies. That is a considerably more modest claim than replacement, and it appears to be the accurate one.

A caution on which robots these are

Several outlets have described the Hangzhou units as Unitree G1 robots. <strong>Hangzhou’s official reporting does not identify them that way.</strong> The city describes them as intelligent traffic robots developed for the traffic-police application — specialised machines rather than off-the-shelf consumer or research platforms.

This distinction matters if you are trying to work out what such a system costs or whether an equivalent could be procured elsewhere. A purpose-built municipal deployment and a commercially available humanoid are different products with different price structures.

Where secondary reporting and official sources disagree, we have followed the official source and flagged the gap rather than resolving it in either direction.

The wider Hangzhou programme

The traffic robots sit inside a broader AI-policing deployment. Since March 2026, police around West Lake have operated an integrated system combining robot dogs, drones and autonomous patrol vehicles, with the machines sharing information and coordinating operations.

That integration is arguably more significant than any single machine. A humanoid directing traffic is a visible novelty; a coordinated system where ground robots, aerial drones and patrol vehicles exchange data is an operational architecture.

Shenzhen: police patrol humanoids

Shenzhen manufacturer <strong>EngineAI</strong> has had humanoids publicly demonstrated patrolling alongside Chinese special police personnel, with reporting identifying the company’s T800 among the police-patrol humanoids.

Patrol alongside officers is a different proposition from autonomous policing, and the distinction is worth preserving. These are machines operating within a human-controlled system, performing presence and structured tasks.

Aimoga and the wheeled alternative

Not every police robot is bipedal. Chinese government reporting has described the <strong>Aimoga Smart Police Robot</strong> as a wheeled traffic-police robot capable of performing traffic-police arm gestures.

The wheeled form factor is worth noting because it reflects a genuine engineering trade. Bipedal locomotion is expensive, power-hungry and mechanically complex. For a machine that stands at an intersection and gestures, wheels solve the problem at a fraction of the cost. The humanoid form is chosen for public legibility and acceptance as much as for capability.

Factory deployment: the less visible story

Public-facing robots attract the coverage; manufacturing deployment is where the volume is.

AgiBot humanoids have undergone sustained factory deployment and validation, <strong>including 24/7 operation on an electronics manufacturing line</strong>. In April 2026 the company’s Genie G2 humanoids performed precision work at a tablet-manufacturing facility in Nanchang — identifying components, picking materials from conveyor systems, placing them into testing equipment and separating anomalies.

Continuous operation on a production line is a materially higher bar than a demonstration. It requires reliability, maintainability and integration with existing systems, and it produces measurable economic output rather than footage.

The production numbers behind it

Deployment at this scale rests on manufacturing that did not exist a few years ago.

Unitree reported delivering approximately <strong>18,000 bipedal humanoid robots</strong> through July 2026. AgiBot reported reaching <strong>15,000 humanoid robots</strong> produced by June 2026. Research firm TrendForce has forecast Chinese humanoid output rising roughly <strong>94% across 2026</strong>, with Unitree and AgiBot accounting for close to 80% of Chinese shipments.

TrendForce has characterised the second half of 2026 as a transition from prototypes toward commercial applications producing measurable economic value. The deployments above are what that transition looks like in practice.

What these robots actually do, honestly

The Hangzhou machines are best described as AI-enabled robotic traffic assistants operating within a police-controlled system. They perform repetitive, structured tasks — gestures, warnings, directions, pedestrian management — while humans retain responsibility for complex enforcement, accidents and emergencies.

That is genuinely useful and it is not autonomous policing. The gap between the two is large, and it is the gap most coverage elides.

What has changed is the combination rather than any single capability: robots, embodied AI software, mass production capacity, manufacturing applications and public-sector deployment developing simultaneously. Any one of those alone would be incremental. Together they are why 2026 looks different from the demonstration era.

Can you buy one outside China?

For US buyers this has become the central question, and it changed on 28 July 2026 when the FCC added foreign-made advanced robotic devices to its Covered List. Models already holding equipment authorization can remain on the market; new models face a substantially harder path.

The specialised municipal robots described here are a further question again — purpose-built government deployments are not generally available products, whatever the underlying platform.
